01 About me

Iris Nijenhuis is an Amsterdam based designer with a passion for laser cutting and a wide interest in experimental shapes and structures. She graduated from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute with a collection of fabrics and unique pieces that emerged from a broad research into the use innovative techniques. She tried to extend the value of textile by extracting the essence and adding functionality to the fabric. By experimenting with laser cutting she developed a technique in which the fabric is cut into small puzzle pieces that form the basis of the design process. By connecting the puzzle pieces together manually, inspiring shapes and structures are created that can form various products.

02 Project Process

These colourful, lightweight statement pieces are for the curious and might even bring your mood into a state of “Euphoria”. The playful collection triggers personal fantasy and invites interaction with the design, real conversation starters!

My work stems from broad research into the potential of textiles. I have developed a modular system in which textiles have a constructive function. Without the use of a sewing machine, stitching or glue.

03 Relationship to the Expo

Face to face with an installation or wall relief by Joris Kuipers you are about to enter a different dimension where the chaotic, random events of life have been captured and carefully rearranged to create an animated, lyrical object of beauty.

Constellations reminiscent of billowing clouds, minerals and flowers in bloom testify to the vitality of nature and our own capacity for joy.
