Vision

Hug started as a mission to make a change in the wasteful culture of the Fast Fashion industry. That’s why I give used materials with a story a second live. I believe adding something special from yourself creates long lasting products, so I show the world that we just have to ‘hug’ what we already have.

Relation to the Expo

A world in which textile waste and social injustice no long exist, it’s like a beautiful dream I hope one day come true and I’m determined to contribute towards it. I cannot change the world on my own, but I will make a positive impact. By making sustainable choices myself and showing others it doesn’t have to be difficult, expensive or unrealistic. I show, with an everyday product, that it is possible to make beautiful, valuable products from materials we have labeled as unusable or waste. By bringing your own precious memories to life, Hug bags take on another dimension. They teach you to cherish what you already have. You will never throw it away, you will ‘hug’ it for life.

About Jolien

I’m Jolien Roesthuis, bag designer and sustainable entrepreneur. Because of my background in textiles I saw a lot of injustice in this industry and this motivated me to do something against it. We no longer value clothing, we easily throw it away when we don’t like it anymore, but I really believe we should no longer see used textiles as waste, but as reusable materials for special products with a unique story. This mission, in combination with my personal interest in fashion and my fascination for craftmanship, made me open my own studio, called Old2Gold, for bag design in 2017. Since then, I have worked on many beautiful projects as a skilled bag maker. Hug - #huginmybag is my newest concept which I launched at the Dutch Desing Week in Eindhoven last year.
